🔧 My Essential Gardening Tools for Spring 2025

As the gardening season kicks into full gear, having the right tools can make all the difference. I’ve been buying some new bits myself the past few days so I thought I’d share what made it onto my shortlist… and hopefully it can also help you maintain a lush lawn and vibrant garden.

I know this is a bit of a different kind of email to what you are used to from us, but I thought that seeing as I’d already done the hard work of trawling through these myself over the weekend, I might as well share it with you all...

🏡 Lawnmowers

Rear-Roller Petrol Lawnmowers - Lets get some stripes!

• Hayter Harrier 41 Rear Roller Petrol Lawnmower
  A classic choice for creating that quintessential striped lawn. This hand-propelled mower offers precision and durability. Hayter have a great product range and I’ve had a few of them over the years.

• Cobra Electric Start Self-Propelled Rear Roller Petrol Lawnmower
  Combines the convenience of electric start with the power of petrol. Its full-width rear roller ensures a professional finish. - Spoiler: this is the one I ended up buying! The fact its self-propelled and electric start swung it for me.

• Mountfield Rear Roller Self-Propelled Rotary Mower 18"
  Features a robust steel chassis and a 46cm cutting width, ideal for medium to large lawns. The rear roller delivers a neat striped effect. The engines on these are great. I had a Briggs & Stratton engine on a mower years and years ago, I kept it outside all year, never serviced it, and it always started on the first pull - its a quality bit of kit at a great price.

Battery-Powered Lawnmowers:

• Greenworks 40V Cordless Lawnmower
  Ideal for lawns up to 500m², this mower offers a 41cm cutting width and comes with two 40V 2Ah batteries and a charger.

• Einhell Power X-Change 18/33 Cordless Lawnmower
  Compact and efficient, featuring a 33cm cutting width and a 30L grass box, suitable for smaller gardens. I seriously considered getting this for the front lawn, which is quite small and hard work to get a bigger mower to from the back garden, but I thought it was over-kill to have two mowers ha ha.

✂️ Strimmers

• SMILOVII 24V Cordless Strimmer
  Lightweight and telescopic, comes with multiple blade options (so it can be used as an edger too) and two 2000mAh batteries for extended use. At £55 this seems too good to be true, so I’ve bought one to give it a go.

• Terratek 20V Cordless Strimmer
  Offers a fast-charging battery and includes 30 blades, making it versatile for various trimming tasks. Nearly bought this had it not been for the better price of the Smilovii one.

🌿 Hedge Trimmers

• Greenworks Cordless Hedge Trimmer
  Equipped with 61cm dual-action blades, it's designed for efficient and clean cuts on hedges and shrubs. I know someone with this and have used it. I was quite surprised with how well it cut given its electric… I’m quite biased towards petrol!

• NETTA 2-in-1 Grass Shear & Hedge Trimmer
  A versatile tool with interchangeable blades, suitable for both edging and shrub trimming. I didn’t buy this one only because I didn’t really need the extra attachment.

🌱 Lawn Aerators

• Colwelt Lawn Spike Aerator
  Features a non-slip T-handle and solid steel spikes, ideal for aerating compacted soils and lawns.

• EEIEER Hollow Tine Aerator
  Designed to reduce soil compaction, this tool removes cores of soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots. This is the one I went for because of the collection tray.

🧤 Hand Tools

• Felco F2 Classic Bypass Hand Pruner
  Renowned for durability and precision, these pruners are a staple for any gardener. These are my go-to pruners… they are really god and if you oil them, they will last years. Well worth the money.

  Includes essential tools like a trowel, weeder, and hand rake, all stored in a convenient carrying bag. For £26 this is unbeatable value, it’s essentially every hand tool you’ll need.
